How Projection Mapping Works
Projection mapping is not just pointing a projector at a wall. It is a multi-step technical process that requires precise calibration between content, hardware, and the physical surface you are projecting onto.
The workflow breaks down into four main stages:
1. Content Creation — A designer or motion graphics artist builds video content that matches the exact geometry of the target surface. This means every window, ledge, column, or curve on a building facade needs to be measured and modeled in 3D software like Cinema 4D, TouchDesigner, or After Effects. The content is rendered to match the surface dimensions at the projector’s native resolution.
2. Media Server — The rendered content gets loaded onto a media server (we typically use Disguise d3 or Resolume Arena). The media server handles real-time playback, edge blending when multiple projectors are involved, and geometry correction. For multi-projector setups, the server splits the content across outputs and manages overlap zones.
3. Projector Output — High-lumen projectors push the image onto the surface. For outdoor mapping in NYC, you need a minimum of 20,000 lumens per projector. Most of our mapping projects use between 2 and 8 projectors depending on surface size and ambient light conditions. Each projector needs a dedicated SDI or DisplayPort feed from the media server.
4. Surface Alignment — This is where the real skill comes in. Using the media server’s warping tools, a technician aligns each projector’s output to the physical surface in real time. This process — called “mapping” — involves adjusting geometry point by point until the projected image wraps perfectly around the architecture. A good tech can align a single projector in 30–60 minutes. A complex multi-projector setup can take a full day.
The entire chain needs to work together without latency. Any mismatch between content timing, media server output, and projector alignment creates visible errors that break the illusion.
Projector Specs That Matter for Mapping
Not every projector works for mapping. You need high output, sharp optics, and reliable color consistency across multiple units. Here are the models we keep in rotation for mapping projects:

Key specs to pay attention to: lumens determine how bright the image appears against ambient light. For indoor mapping in a dark room, 10,000–15,000 lumens works. Outdoor nighttime mapping on a building starts at 20,000 lumens per projector. Daytime outdoor work needs 40,000+ lumens.
Resolution matters because mapping stretches the image across irregular surfaces, which can expose pixel structure. 4K gives you finer detail, especially on surfaces where the audience is close.
Lens selection affects throw distance — the distance between the projector and the surface. In tight NYC spaces like warehouse interiors, you often need a short-throw lens to cover a large surface from just a few feet away. For building facades where you can position the projector across a street or parking lot, a long-throw lens delivers sharper focus.
All three models use laser light engines, which means no lamp replacements, consistent brightness over the event duration, and instant on/off — no warm-up time.
NYC Venues Where We Have Done Projection Mapping
New York gives you an incredible range of surfaces to map. We have done projects across all five boroughs, but most of our mapping work falls into a few venue categories:
Brooklyn Warehouses — East Williamsburg and Bushwick have some of the best raw spaces for mapping. Exposed brick, high ceilings, industrial steel beams — all of it creates interesting geometry for mapped content. The challenge is usually power. Many warehouse spaces have limited electrical service, and a multi-projector rig can pull 30–60 amps on a single circuit. We bring distribution panels and work with the venue to ensure adequate power.
Manhattan Hotel Ballrooms — Hotels like to use projection mapping for galas, product launches, and corporate dinners. The surfaces are usually flat walls or curved ballroom ceilings. The advantage is controlled lighting — you can black out a ballroom completely. The challenge is rigging. Hotels often restrict where you can hang equipment, so we use truss towers or floor-mounted projector stands.
Museum and Gallery Interiors — Museums want immersive installations, and projection mapping delivers that without attaching anything to the walls. We have mapped content onto sculptures, architectural features, and purpose-built structures. The content tends to be more artistic — generative visuals, slow-motion footage, abstract patterns.
Rooftop Events — Manhattan and Brooklyn rooftops are popular for summer events, and mapping onto adjacent building walls creates a dramatic backdrop. The technical challenge is wind (projectors on tripods can vibrate) and ambient city light. We typically use the highest-output projectors we have and schedule mapping content for after sunset.
