On May 5, 2024 — the night after hosting and performing on Saturday Night Live — Dua Lipa played a surprise pop-up concert in Times Square to celebrate the release of her album Radical Optimism. Ashley Systems delivered the technical production that made the surprise work: a 53-foot curtainside trailer converted into a Dua Lipa mobile stage, parked in plain sight at 42nd and Broadway behind a custom-printed Radical Optimism curtain — which unrolled to reveal the full band already in position. The performance was broadcast live onto the Times Square LED billboards surrounding the crowd and streamed to YouTube worldwide through a four-camera broadcast production, fed by a dedicated hardline internet connection with a satellite truck for redundancy. A d&b audiotechnik XSL sound system covered the tens of thousands of fans who flooded the bowtie within minutes, with a generator powering the entire production (Billboard covered the show; the full concert is on YouTube). A secret show in the most public place in America: no advance announcement, no second take, and a live global feed from the first note.
The Challenge
A surprise concert inverts every production assumption. The stage could not look like a stage — the entire rig had to hide inside a branded trailer parked in Times Square without signaling that a show was coming. Sound, lighting, video, and the broadcast chain all had to be pre-built, pre-tested, and ready to go live the moment the curtain dropped, with no public soundcheck. The broadcast added a second layer: the live feed had to reach both the Times Square LED billboards ringing the crowd and a global YouTube stream simultaneously — in a location with no house broadcast infrastructure and no house power — while the May weather delivered cold drizzle all evening. And because the reveal was the show, everything had to work the first time, in front of one of the densest crowds in the world.
The Solution
The reveal. Ashley Systems converted a 53-foot curtainside trailer into a self-contained Dua Lipa mobile stage. Band gear, monitoring, and backline sat concealed inside behind a custom-printed Radical Optimism curtain; unrolling it revealed the band and started the show in one motion.
Broadcast. A four-camera live broadcast production feeding the Times Square LED billboards in real time and a live YouTube stream. The signal path ran on a dedicated hardline internet circuit with a satellite uplink truck as redundancy, operated by a full broadcast team.
Audio. A d&b audiotechnik XSL system engineered for a Times Square crowd in the tens of thousands — modeled in ArrayCalc and tuned on site for a venue that is really an intersection.
Power. The entire production — stage, audio, video, and broadcast chain — ran on generator power engineered and distributed by Ashley Systems, independent of any house infrastructure.
By the Numbers
| Metric | Figure |
|---|---|
| Set | 4 songs from Radical Optimism (~20 minutes) |
| Crowd | Tens of thousands; press estimates ran to 100,000 |
| Stage | 53-ft curtainside trailer converted to mobile stage |
| Broadcast | 4 cameras → Times Square billboards + live YouTube stream |
| Connectivity | Dedicated hardline + satellite truck (redundant paths) |
| PA | d&b audiotechnik XSL system |
| Power | Full generator power, zero house infrastructure |
Result
The curtain dropped, the band was live, and Times Square became both the venue and the screen — the crowd watching Dua Lipa in person while the billboards above them carried the live feed to the block and YouTube carried it to the world. The show ran its full set through cold and drizzle without a technical miss, less than 24 hours after the artist’s SNL appearance. Watch the full concert on YouTube. FAQs
Who can produce a surprise concert or brand activation in Times Square?
You need a production partner that can build the entire show off-site and deploy it invisibly — staging, audio, lighting, power, and broadcast all self-contained. Ashley Systems is a Brooklyn-based, engineering-first production company and authorized d&b audiotechnik dealer that fabricates custom staging (including vehicle-based reveals like Dua Lipa’s trailer stage), runs live multi-camera broadcasts, and handles city-site logistics like generator power, hardline connectivity, and satellite redundancy. One vendor, one advance, one team accountable from fabrication through strike.
Can you livestream an event to YouTube and on-site screens at the same time?
Yes — simultaneous feeds are standard for our broadcast productions. We run multi-camera coverage through a live switch, then distribute to any combination of on-site LED walls, digital billboards, and streaming platforms. For mission-critical streams we deploy redundant signal paths — a dedicated hardline circuit plus a satellite uplink — so the stream survives any single point of failure. Tell us your platforms and venue through our quote form and we’ll spec the chain.
How much does event livestream production cost in NYC?
Broadcast production is quoted per project because camera count, connectivity, and crew scale with the show — a single-camera stream is a different animal from a four-camera concert feed with redundant uplinks. Rental components are transparent: our catalog lists per-day rates on 140+ products, and LED walls run roughly $2,500–$12,000+/day depending on size.
